What do I need to do to use a newly obtained character in a show?

You will need to assign them to a Group first.
Go to Characters > Edit and tap a member to swap. Choose the character you want to add to the Group and tap "Confirm."

You can have up to 10 Groups. Tap the numbers at the top of the Edit Groups screen, or the left and right arrows, to toggle between them.
